Vanuatu and the people of the South Pacific have long held a tender place in my heart. Our youngest son was born in Vanuatu and joined our family through adoption.
Years ago, on the island of Erromango, a local artist and record keeper shared with us a tradition sacred to his people—an account, preserved through their artwork, of Christ visiting the Isles of the Sea.
Years later, my son asked me if I would paint it.
I tried to imagine the majesty of that moment, Christ appearing with tenderness and love. There is something deeply moving to me in the possibility that the Savior has reached His children in places and times of which we know so little.
There are no distant shores to Christ. There are only His children.
Imagining and painting such a sacred moment among people I have come to call my brothers and sisters was deeply tender to me.
Today, Isles of the Sea is part of the Port Vila Vanuatu Temple project. Somehow, a painting born from a sacred story shared with us on an island years ago found its way home—to the islands, and to the people, who first placed that image in my heart.
