The inspiration for this painting came one day as I watched my husband carry a particularly heavy burden for our family. He has always been a steady and faithful man, and in that moment I found myself thinking of Joseph—the husband of Mary and the earthly father entrusted with the care of Jesus.
Scripture gives us relatively few words about Joseph, and yet he was given an extraordinary stewardship. He cared for Mary, protected the young Jesus, provided for his family, listened when God directed him, and quietly carried responsibilities we can only imagine.
I wanted his face to hold some of that weight—the concern of a father, the strength of a protector, and the quiet resolve of a man willing to do what God had asked of him.
There is something sacred in a father’s stewardship: in providing, protecting, guiding, sacrificing, and quietly carrying burdens that those he loves may never fully see.
Joseph reminds me that some of the greatest acts of discipleship—and some of the greatest expressions of love—are lived quietly.
