The Story Behind O My Father

There are prayers of gratitude and praise, and then there are the prayers that come when life has brought us to the edge of what we can carry.

In this painting, Christ turns His face toward heaven and His Father. I wanted to capture something raw and deeply human in that moment—the longing, the pleading, and the trust that can exist alongside sorrow.

The Savior Himself knew what it was to grieve, to suffer, and to cry out, “O my Father.” His example reminds us that we do not have to wait until our hearts are peaceful or our circumstances make sense before we turn to God.

Perhaps it is in our most difficult moments that we need to look heavenward most.

The Father is there. He hears the prayers of gratitude and the prayers of lament—the eloquent ones and the ones for which we can barely find words.
