I painted my granddaughter after witnessing something I have seen so many times in little children—the instinct to tenderly care for something smaller than themselves.

She holds the little lamb in her arms, looking down at it with such tenderness. Beside her stands the Savior, His shepherd’s staff in His hand and His arm gently encircling her. The Shepherd is watching over her as she, in her own small way, learns to shepherd another.

I love the thought that perhaps this desire to care for one another is written upon our hearts long before we even understand it. We learn what it is to comfort because we have been comforted. We learn to nurture because we have been nurtured. We learn to carry one another because someone first carried us.

Throughout our lives, we are each entrusted with something precious to care for—a child, a friend, a parent, a neighbor, a wounded heart, or simply another person placed in our path.

And all the while, the Good Shepherd stands near.

As we learn to shepherd one another, He is still shepherding us.
