For nearly seven years, I wanted to paint this sacred moment between Mary Magdalene and the risen Christ, but each time I tried, I felt inadequate to do it justice.
Then, at Easter, I found courage in Mary herself.
She came to Christ with all that she had experienced and all that she carried. She loved Him, followed Him, and on that first Easter morning, she became the first recorded witness of the resurrected Lord.
And He called her by name.
That changed something in me. I realized I did not have to be capable of perfectly capturing such a sacred moment. I could simply come as I was and offer what I had.
So I painted Mary looking into the face of her Savior, trying to capture the love between them and the truth her story whispers to me still:
Christ knows our names. Whatever we carry, wherever we have been, we can come to Him as we are—and find that He is already reaching for us.
