I painted this during the final season of my father’s life, after he was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and I went home to Canada to help care for him.

Until then, I had thought of birth, baptism, and marriage as sacred passages in our lives. I had never understood that death could be sacred, too.

As I cared for my father, there were moments when I felt I was standing on holy ground. Heaven seemed very near. He had spent much of his life loving and following Jesus Christ, and as his time grew short, he spoke with such anticipation about seeing Him.

I began to imagine that moment.

This painting grew from that image—the instant when a long earthly journey is finished and we finally see the Savior we have trusted, sought, and loved. The figure running toward Christ is my father, but as I painted him from behind, the image began to feel larger than one person’s story.

Perhaps any of us can imagine someone we love there.

The journey finished. The veil passed through. Christ waiting with open arms.
